Every lantern carries a wish, and a little of the year’s bad luck, up and away. On the full moon of the twelfth Lanna month the people of Chiang Mai still walk down to the Ping River, light them together, and let them go.

This is an imagined night inspired by Yi Peng, a Lanna festival of light in northern Thailand. The characters, circa-1900 setting, simultaneous releases and lantern counts are artistic inventions, not a historical reconstruction. Yi Peng follows the lunar calendar; the date changes each year. This scene is not guidance for releasing real lanterns. Original source files are preserved.
